Combatting Loneliness and Fostering Community Connections
For many people with disabilities, loneliness is a quiet struggle that too often goes unseen.
At Devoted Supports, we believe that everyone deserves connection, community, and a sense of belonging. Supported Independent Living (SIL) is one way we help make that possible.
SIL is more than a place to live. It’s a way to grow.
In a SIL home, participants live with others in a supportive, shared environment, with help on hand for day-to-day tasks and personal care.
But the real magic happens in the moments between. Shared meals. Conversations over coffee. The laughter that comes with learning new skills together.
These everyday interactions foster a strong sense of community, something that can be life-changing for people who’ve experienced isolation.
From isolation to inclusion
Many participants come to SIL after spending long periods without meaningful social contact.
Whether due to mobility issues, mental health challenges, or lack of access to inclusive environments, the result is often the same: disconnection.
SIL helps change that. By living alongside others and engaging in group activities, participants are able to:
- Build friendships through shared experiences
- Develop social confidence and communication skills
- Participate in hobbies, outings, and celebrations
- Feel seen, heard, and valued as part of a community
We do support with, not just for
At Devoted Supports, we approach every SIL placement with a trauma-informed, person-centred mindset. That means we don’t just do things for participants.
We do things with them.
From planning meals to joining community events, we’re right there, empowering people to try new things and grow in confidence.
And because each person is different, we take the time to get to know what lights them up. Whether it’s art, sport, music, or a walk to the local café, we support people to pursue meaningful connection in their own way.
