Preparing to Plan: Planning Card Sets

Aug 12, 2024 | Participants

Why talk about “preparing to plan”? It might seem like an extra step, but for many, especially those new to planning or those with plans that haven’t worked out, a little preparation can make a big difference. Planning is a lifelong process – we adjust our plans daily, weekly, or yearly as our needs and circumstances change. A strong foundation makes planning a natural and adaptable part of life.

Flexible, Person-Centred Planning

Don’t feel pressured to plan every aspect of your life rigidly. Planning should empower you and your supporters, not restrict spontaneity. Having a disability doesn’t mean you must have everything planned out or follow plans strictly. Enjoy the freedom to go with the flow!

The Heart of Communication

Good communication is key. If you have complex communication needs, it’s vital your supporters understand how you express your likes, dislikes, and desires. This leads to person-centred planning, where your strengths, interests, needs, and dreams are at the heart of your plan. Involving people who know and care about you is also crucial.

Key Elements of Person-Centred Planning

  • Discover and Develop Your Strengths: Explore your unique gifts and interests. Recognising your strengths helps build a plan based on your potential.
  • Create a Vision for Your Life: Encourage others to see beyond limitations. Sharing success stories can inspire and help visualise a positive future.
  • Build a Support Network: Form a group of supporters, both paid and unpaid, to provide diverse perspectives and help achieve your goals.
  • Engage with Your Community: Build connections within your community for support and new opportunities. Educating your community fosters inclusivity.
  • Adapt Services to Your Needs: Services should be flexible and responsive to your needs. Communicate clearly with providers to ensure they support your vision.

Starting Your Planning Process

Feeling overwhelmed? It’s okay to take it step by step. Ask yourself: What’s going well in my life? What do I want to change? What barriers do I face?

Reflecting on these questions helps shape a plan that supports your goals and aspirations. Remember, planning is about creating a flexible framework to help you live the life you want, adapting as you and your circumstances evolve.
